Joe and Terri developed a passion for still photography through an unusual circumstance.
Joe worked as a railroad engineer for 28 years. During the late 90’s while between train trips he would work with Terri to create end of the year videos for the elementary school where she worked. Editing with computer software programs was quite a challenge and consumed much time. Working with Adobe products over the years Joe developed a high proficiency level in Photoshop and Premiere with the help of his long time friend, artist, photographer and skilled Photoshop expert Randy Gay.
In early 2001, Joe sustained a life altering injury to his spine from riding locomotives, which forced him to end his railroad career. Since neck surgery in 2001, Joe is limited to what he can physically do, but entertainingly declares, “Terri does all the heavy chores with a smile.” She continues her passion of working with children and excels in her carreer, while Joe helps other injured railroad workers and their families.
In about 2004 they purchased a used DSLR camera from their friend Randy and began taking still pictures. At first, Joe photographed wildlife, country scenes and ranch work, which he concludes comes from growing up on a small farm located on the edge of San Antonio. Terri wanted more than photos of cows, so together they now shoot anything that she deems has color, beauty and enjoyable for all, although Joe sneaks out for an occasional ranch roundup when she is not looking.
Together they traveled to San Francisco in 2008 for a class on HDR photography with mentors Randy Gay and Bob Howen. Without their coaching and guidance none of the images would have been possible; they are simply the best.
The camera equipment is made up entirely of Canon gear and they recently switched over to the Macintosh platform for all editing. The Adobe family of products is the choice for the photography and web workflow, but they now use Final Cut for video editing. Fine art prints are produced with an Epson large format printer using Epson fine art papers and canvas.
Their full time jobs keep them quite busy, but they find time to get out and enjoy looking for the perfect light and color to capture an image to share with others.
You can find Randy Gay and Bob Howen's work online. They are truly amazing.
